Velocity versus time graphs represent changes that occur in an object's velocity with respect to time. The slope of the line is the acceleration (change in velocity divided by the change in time) of the object. The area under the line (between the line on the graph and the time axis) is the displacement of the object.

An object that has a changing velocity is an object which is accelerating. Accelerating motions are represented on velocity-time graphs by diagonal lines that have slope. After all, the graph is a plot of velocity values with respect to time. If an object is changing its velocity, then the plotted points must be changing their location along the vertical velocity axis, That is, the line must slope - either upward or downward.
