The Particle Wave

The Particle Wave Interactive allows a learner to explore the nature and properties of a wave. A transverse wave is modeled by 60 particles undergoing up-and-down vibrational motion. The distinction between particle motion and wave motion is obvious from the simulation. Wavelength, amplitude, and speed can be varied. Energy detectors can be assigned to particles to monitor changes in their kinetic and potential energy. Cycle counters and timers can be used to determine frequency values.

Users are encouraged to open the Interactive and explore. Or if desired, The Physics Classroom has prepared a student activity for a more directed experience. View ... This activity was designed with the intent of being used by classroom teachers with their students.

The Particle Wave simulation is now available with a Concept Checker. Do the simulation. Then follow it up with the Concept Checker.
