Frequency and Period - Directions

How it Works:

Using the Frequency and Period Concept Builder is quite simple. There are three activities included in this Concept Builder, each with their own unique directions. In the first activity - Two Truths and a Lie - you will be presented three statements. Two are true and one is false. You must identify each statement as being True (T) or False (F). You do so by tapping on the statement. When you do, a letter - T for True or F for False will appear to the left of the statement.Continued tapping on the statement toggles your choice between True and False. As long as you have identified two True and one False statement, a Check Answers button will appear. Once you are satisfied with your selections, tap on the Check Answers button. Your answers will be evaluated and your Progress Report will be updated.

In the second activity - Case Studies - you are presented two sets of data - either two graphs or two numerical data sets. You must analyze the information in the data sets and determine in which case does the object have the greatest frequency or period. You indicate your answer by tapping on the answer field located below the graphic (where it says Tap Here!). Continued tapping toggles back and forth between the two answer options - A or B. Once you'e made a choice, a Check Answer button appears. When you are satisfied with the answer being displayed, tap on the Check Answer button. Your answer will be evaluated and your Progress Report will be updated.

In the third activity - Do the Math! - you must calculate the frequency or the period of a vibrating object ... and you must identify the unit on the answer. Tapping on the answer field pops up a number pad that must be used to enter your numerical answers. Use at least three significant digits. You can select the unit by tapping on the unit field to toggle between the three choices of units. As long as you have a numerical answer and a chosen unit, a Check Answers button appears. If you are satisfied with your numerical answer and unit, tap on the Check Answer button. If your unit is correct, then you will have a chance to correct it before your numerical answer is checked. Your answer will be evaluated and your Progress Report will be updated.

Your goal is to earn "Stars" and to complete one or more activities. Stars are earned when you show success on a particular question. Once you show success on all the questions for a particular activity, you will earn the Trophy for that activity.

Earning Stars

When you start up any of the activities, the number of questions for that activity are shown in the Progress Report area of the Concept Builder. You will notice that there is either a Yellow or a Red background for each question number. When starting up an activity, the background color is Yellow. Answering a "Yellow" question correctly earns you a star for that question number. However, answering it incorrectly turns the background color to Red. A question number with a Red background must be correctly answered twice (without a miss) in order to earn a star.

Getting Help

You will notice that there is a Help Me button underneath the Progress Report. You should learn to use this feature of the program. It's how you can turn an exercise in answering questions into an exercise in learning. Tapping on the Help Me button will open a page with help that is specific to each question. Of course, the Help pages are only helpful if you read them. So take the time to read them. Each Help page contains four sections: a discussion of the Fundamentals, a display of the various Questions in the Question Group, a section titled "How to Think About This Situation", and a set of links to resources in our Tutorial section. You should pay attention to the sectoin titled How to Think About This Situation. You will find what you need to know in the two or three paragraphs in this section. You will also become a better Physics student for doing that. That is, after all, the goal of such an activity as Fequency and Period.

Thanks for being patient with the Directions. Happy learning!
